This website has been here since 1997. It started as an extension and eventual replacement for my printed zine, Fragments, which quickly became too expensive and labor intensive to produce.

In 2017 I started a blog called Nonviolence 3.0, which is about civil resistance strategy and tactics. Meanwhile, the Fragments site languished.

While wanting to keep the blog focused on civil resistance, I also felt the need for a platform to explore more wide-ranging topics and different types of media. Toward that end, I redesigned the Fragments site in 2019.

In contrast to the Nonviolence 3.0 blog, I view Fragments as a creative space that is more about culture than politics. While directly attacking people’s ideologies can harden their beliefs, engaging with them through humor, fun and imagination can open their minds while affirming our common humanity.

About Me

I grew up in New Jersey, spent most of my life in Southern California, and currently find myself in Raleigh, NC. I’m old, white and male. I’ve written about Gene Sharp and civil resistance for Commonweal, The Progressive, Peace Magazine, Waging Nonviolence and elsewhere. To find some other magazine articles I’ve written, search on “James L. VanHise” (the “L” differentiates me from the pop culture historian James Van Hise).

Please follow me on Bluesky and checkout my videos on the Fragments YouTube channel.
